Heathers: So Dark It's...Funny? (Parent Confessions)
Okay, so I just watched Heathers for the first time... I know, I know, I'm late to the party. But wow. My initial reaction is just...wow. Obviously, this is NOT a kids movie, people. Full stop. But as a parent who struggles with the whole 'cliques' thing myself (hello, playground politics!), I found it strangely fascinating, if incredibly disturbing. Winona Ryder is phenomenal as Veronica, and Christian Slater is just...creepy good. I think the thing that struck me the most is how brutally honest it is about the intense pressure teenagers feel to fit in, even if it means sacrificing your own morals and sanity. The croquet scene? Iconic. And the whole 'corn on the cob' incident? I literally gasped. Honestly, some of the dialogue is so over-the-top that it's darkly hilarious. Like, when Heather Chandler says, "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" It's awful, but also kind of brilliant. But the casual way they talk about death...yeesh. That's what really makes this movie so uncomfortable. It's a satire, clearly, but it holds a mirror up to some pretty messed-up stuff about high school culture. I'm still processing it, to be honest. I kept wondering what I would do if my kid ever got caught up in that kind of toxic environment. It's definitely a conversation starter, but tread carefully! I think I'd recommend older teens only, and with a LOT of discussion afterward. What did you all think? Am I the only one who found it both disturbing and strangely compelling? I have mixed feelings. Someone help me understand what I just watched, LOL. One typo I noticed was when one of the letters had "faked" instead of "forged", but that's just a fun note in this otherwise weird trip of a movie.
