Anyone else SUPER conflicted about Heathers?!
Okay, so I finally watched Heathers (1988). I know, I know, late to the party! I went into it knowing basically nothing except it's a dark comedy about high school cliques. And wow, it's... a lot. I'm trying to figure out how I even feel about it. On the one hand, Winona Ryder is amazing, and the satire is definitely sharp. I mean, the whole croquet scene with the brightly colored blazers contrasting against the dark humor? Genius! But on the other hand... obviously, the subject matter is pretty intense. As a parent, I'm wondering how much the film is glamorizing violence and, frankly, pretty disturbing behavior. Like, Veronica's complicity is definitely explored, but the whole dynamic with JD is so twisted. I found myself laughing (uncomfortably) at some parts but also feeling really uneasy. Specifically, the scene after Heather Chandler dies and everyone starts acting like they knew her so well? That felt SO real, and that's kind of what made it hit harder, I think. And the pep rally scene... ugh. Anyone else find that scene particularly jarring? Or am I just being overly sensitive? So, I guess my question is: How do you reconcile the dark humor and the social commentary with the truly messed-up stuff that happens? Is it okay to find this movie funny? I'm genuinely curious to hear other people's thoughts, especially from other parents. It's definitely one I'll be thinking about for a while, and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, haha!
