Okay, Hear Me Out: Oliver & Company Holds Up (Sort Of)
Alright, so I was flipping channels the other day and stumbled onto Oliver & Company. Yeah, the Disney one with the talking animals in NYC. Don't judge! I have a soft spot for 80s animation, even if it's not exactly Die Hard. Nostalgia got the better of me. And you know what? It's not terrible. The animation style is very cool, very modern, and the characters are so well made! I loved the dog Dodger and the way he moved, just a natural movement! Plus, it has a gritty New York vibe that's kinda cool, even if it's a cartoon. Honestly, the story is whatever, a kinda kiddie version of Oliver Twist. A cat gets mixed up with a gang of stray dogs, yadda yadda. But the musical numbers? Solid. Huey Lewis doing "Once Upon a Time in New York City"? Absolute banger. And Cheech Marin as Tito? He's hilarious! I remembered thinking he was so cool when I was a kid. Still holds up. Rita's voice is also great! Okay, okay, it's not exactly a groundbreaking piece of cinema, and the villain is kinda...lame. But for a fun, nostalgic trip, you could do way worse. Plus, it's got some pretty great chases throughout New York. No crazy explosions or anything, but it really uses the whole city as it's setting, I love that. I like the fact that it sets up such a unique aesthetic. And if you need something to watch with the kids, hey, it's better than some of the garbage they're putting out now. It's no Who Framed Roger Rabbit in terms of animation achievements, but it's got its charm. 7/10 for pure nostalgia and some genuinely fun moments.
