Dangerous Liaisons - Still packs a punch, or is it just me?
Okay, fellow Gen Xers, moviebuff_marc checking in. Just re-watched "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) the other night, and wow, the layers of deception in this thing! I still get a kick out of it. It's got that whole "Games of Power" type feel – like a period piece version of "Wall Street" almost, but with more powdered wigs and corsets. I mean, Malkovich as Valmont is just PERFECTION. His smarmy, calculating charm is so magnetic, you almost forget he's the villain, LOL. Speaking of villains, Glenn Close as the Marquise? Come ON. That's some next-level ice queen stuff right there. The scene where she's crying in the mirror after Valmont refuses her...chills, man. Pure drama. I always felt like Michelle Pfeiffer was a little too…sweet? Maybe that's the point, and she grows into this role as the innocent victim, but I always felt like she wasn't quite on the same level as Glenn and John. Anyone else feel that way? What strikes me most, though, is how timeless the themes are. Manipulation, reputation, love vs. lust... this stuff doesn't age. It's kinda like "All About Eve" but with more scheming, and fancy dresses. Anyone seen the stage play this is based on? Wondering how it compares. So, tell me, am I being overly nostalgic, or does "Dangerous Liaisons" still hold up as a truly great film? What's your favorite scene or line? Let's hear it!
