Midnight Run: More Than Just a Buddy Cop Movie?
Okay, horror peeps, I know, I know, Midnight Run ain't horror. But hear me out! I was re-watching it the other night (it was on TBS, no shame) and it struck me – there's a really dark undercurrent to this movie. It's easy to get caught up in the snappy dialogue and De Niro's grumpy charm, but think about it: Jack Walsh is basically a glorified kidnapper! He's hunting down a guy, Mardukas, who's in SERIOUS danger from some VERY scary people (the mob, hello!). And while Mardukas is supposedly a criminal, he's also genuinely trying to do the right thing by giving evidence. Sure, he skipped bail – but wouldn't YOU if the mafia was breathing down your neck? The FBI are shady as hell in this too, willing to bend the rules to get Mardukas. I'm starting to think that Walsh is not a hero. He's more like a well-meaning pawn in a much bigger, much nastier game. Is it just me or is the scene where he beats up the guy in the airplane toilet (lol) a little unnecessary and kinda brutal? It's one of those cases where you'e rooting for these guys (Walsh and Mardukas) but you start to wonder how bad are these guys (Walsh and Mardukas)! I guess my 'theory' is less a theory and more just... a realization that Midnight Run, beneath all the laughs, is a pretty cynical movie about morality being REALLY grey. It's not just a fun 80s action-comedy, it's a low-key examination of corruption and the lengths people will go to for money or justice (or what they THINK is justice.) Anyone else ever felt this way watching it? Maybe I'm just reading too much into it because I normally watch slashers, haha. But I needed to share my random thoughts. Lemme know what you think!
