Tina vs. Jason: More Like Tina AND Jason. (Friday the 13th Part VII Thoughts)
Okay, so I finally got around to rewatching Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. I know, I know, I'm late to the party. But honestly? It's...fine. Like, middle-of-the-road Friday the 13th fine. The whole telekinetic angle with Tina (Lar Park-Lincoln) is what makes it stand out, obviously. And honestly, the practical effects are pretty gruesome, even by Friday standards. When Jason literally tears Dr. Crews in half? chef's kiss. That's the good stuff. But here's where I'm torn. The setup is so weird! Tina's powers are because she accidentally killed her abusive dad in the lake? A bit much, even for this franchise. And then, she just happens to bring Jason back? Suspiciously convenient, IMO. Plus, some of the acting? Oof. The rest of the teens are just the usual cannon fodder, which is expected, but no one really stood out besides Tina. I'm a sucker for final girls with a bit of bite and she delivers. I'm also not convinced Kane Hodder was at his peak slasher performance here. He looks amazing as Jason – truly terrifying – but something about his movements felt a little…stiff? Maybe it's just me. Still, the final showdown between Tina and Jason is pretty epic. Telekinetic powers vs. brute force? I'm here for it. Overall, is it a top-tier Friday flick? Nah. But is it worth a watch for the kills, the 80s cheese, and the unique premise? Absolutely. Just don't expect too much depth, guys. It's Jason Voorhees, not Shakespeare. 🔪
