Scorsese's "Last Temptation": Was it really that scandalous?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Last Temptation of Christ". I know, I know, decades late to the party. Always heard it was super controversial, like, banned-in-some-countries controversial. And yeah, the whole 'Jesus getting married and having kids' bit at the end is...something. But honestly? I wasn't shocked. Maybe the years have desensitized me, I dunno. Willem Dafoe does a killer job portraying Jesus's internal struggle. Like, you really buy that he's just a dude grappling with something way bigger than he is, right? Makes him relatable, in a weird way. My theory, and hear me out, is that the 'temptation' isn't just about sex and a normal life. It's about the responsibility of being the messiah. I think the film is trying to make him a more vulnerable, and understandable person. That scene where he's hammering away, and the voices start, then later when Judas is trying to kick him into gear? Crazy anxiety inducing. And maybe the point is that even if he did choose a different path, the idea of love and sacrifice would still be out there in the world. Like, it's not dependent on him alone. Whoa. But the thing that stuck with me the most was Judas, played by Harvey Keitel. He isn't really a bad guy. He's just doing what he believes is necessary, even if it means betraying his friend. I saw an interview with Scorsese where he mentions that Judas and Jesus were the closest of friends and that Judas was acting out of love (some kind of love haha), but maybe that's what makes it hurt so much. Like it's not a big bad villain, but someone who's actually close, ya know? Anyway, I think a lot of the initial outrage was overblown. It's thought-provoking, yeah, but it also explores some pretty deep questions about faith, doubt, and what it means to be human. Plus, Scorsese's direction is just on point. Maybe it's not an easy watch, but it's definitely interesting. What's your guys' take? Did this movie really get to you like it did the protestors?
