Is "Frantic" (1988) Actually About...Something Else?

Okay, so I just watched "Frantic" (1988) for the first time (Harrison Ford is great as always and even better in older films!). And while the surface plot is pretty straightforward – wife disappears, frantic husband searches – I can't shake the feeling there's something more going on. Hear me out; maybe it's not just a suspenseful thriller, but a commentary on American's abroad when they're dropped into a new culture -- especially during that time period. Think about it: Dr. Walker is completely lost in Paris. He doesn't speak the language, the police are unhelpful (and honestly, kinda rude!), and everything is just different. Maybe the disappearance of his wife is just a plot device to thrust this American into a foreign culture that he doesn't understand. It forces him to adapt, to become almost a different person to survive. The whole thing with the Statue of Liberty, and her carrying the drugs, is also a great symbol, right? It gives the whole story a certain level of anti-American sentiment, but also a degree of 'ignorance is bliss'. What if the bag-switch that kicked the whole thing off was no accident? What if someone was specifically targeting Americans to get drugs into their country? It would explain why the cops are so useless – maybe they already know what's going on, or are even complicit! The fact that Michelle ends up being so valuable and connected also feels like another symbolic parallel. She's the 'outsider' who seems to adapt better to the cultural norms than Dr. Walker, who is a doctor nonetheless. Am I reaching? Probably. But that's what makes a good movie, right? It makes you really think about it and consider all of the underlying themes. I think that if you enjoy a mind-bending flick, this one is def worth a watch. What do you guys think? Any other "Frantic" theories floating around?
