Frantic (1988) - Still Holds Up!
Okay, so, I just rewatched "Frantic" (1988) last night, and man, it STILL creeps me out. I know Polanski's name isn't exactly... clean, but you gotta admit he knows how to build suspense. Harrison Ford at his most frazzled is just gold. The whole vibe of him as a total fish-out-of-water in Paris, desperately trying to find his wife... it's so good. "Where's my wife?!" takes on a whole new meaning, y'know? That cafe scene where he's trying to ask about Michelle and the waiter just stares blankly? Peak anxiety. And the whole suitcase thing? Ugh, gives me the shivers just thinking about it. I'd forgotten how young Emmanuelle Seigner was in this, too! Definitely adds to the strange, almost surreal feeling of the movie. She's got that 'I know more than I'm letting on' thing down pat. I think what makes it work so well is that it feels real. Like, yeah, it's a thriller, but the awkwardness of the language barrier, the confusing bureaucracy, the sheer frustration of being lost in a foreign city... I've BEEN there, man. Okay, maybe not with a smuggled statue and a kidnapped wife involved, but the feeling of helplessness is definitely relatable. Anyway, I'm just sayin', if you haven't seen it (or haven't seen it in a WHILE), give "Frantic" a watch. It's not a perfect movie (the ending's a little... abrupt, maybe?), but it's a solid thriller with some seriously unnerving moments. Plus, peak Harrison Ford. What's not to love?
