Cocoon: The Return - Sentimental fluff or something more?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Cocoon: The Return. Look, I enjoyed the original Cocoon. It had a bittersweet quality, exploring aging and mortality with a touch of sci-fi whimsy. This sequel... well, it's fine. But it definitely lacks the original's spark, doesn't it? It felt like they were trying to recapture the magic, but it came off as a bit forced, and dare I say....kinda cheesy. Don Ameche really gave it his all, but the re-introduction of the characters felt clunky. The whole conflict of 'do we stay on Earth with family or go back to eternal youth' was explored in a much more simplistic, less nuanced way than I expected. The scene where Bernie's grandson almost drowns felt especially contrived – a blatant attempt to inject drama where it wasn't really needed. And don't even get me started on the environmental subplot with the polluted ocean. It felt tacked on, like they were trying to add some 'seriousness' to what is, at its core, a very sentimental story. While the visuals are pretty, the story beats are predictable. I do think the cast had great chemistry, though. It's hard not to feel something when you see these actors revisiting these roles. I wish the script had challenged them more, and given it a harder edge, like the first one did. Overall, if you loved the original Cocoon, you'll probably find something to enjoy here. But temper your expectations. It's a pleasant enough watch, but ultimately, it feels like a missed opportunity. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I just hold the first one in such high regard. Curious to hear what others thought.
