Frank Oz's Underrated Gem: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Thoughts?
Okay, so I've been on a bit of a director deep dive lately, and I just finished revisiting Frank Oz's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988). I feel like it doesn't get nearly enough love when people talk about great comedies. I mean, Michael Caine and Steve Martin are absolute gold together. It almost feels like the perfect blend of British wit and American slapstick. Specifically, that scene with Martin pretending to be Ruprecht and terrorizing Caine is pure comedic genius. The wheelchair bit, the slapping, the overall manic energy... I genuinely laughed out loud. And then Caine's increasingly frustrated reactions are just chef's kiss. I think what's really impressive is how Oz manages to balance the physical comedy with the genuine charm of both characters. You (almost) root for them, even though they're both terrible people. My question is: Do you guys think this film is somewhat overlooked? Or am I just late to the party? I know Oz has directed some other pretty well-regarded comedies, and of course he’s a legend in puppetry, but Dirty Rotten Scoundrels feels like a real high point to me. I also love how it's a remake, but feels so original. Did you prefer it to Bedtime Story or vice versa? Let me know your thoughts!
