Nico Toscani: Man, That Guy Was Intense!

Okay, so I finally watched "Above the Law" the other night, and wow. Just...wow. Steven Seagal's debut, right? I knew he was known for aikido and breaking arms, but I really wasn't prepared for Nico Toscani. He's just this force, y'know? Like, he's trying to be a good cop in Chicago, but you can just see the CIA agent simmering underneath. That whole opening scene, flashing back to Vietnam? Super effective in setting up why he is the way he is, I think. Made me feel for him, even though he's also kinda scary, lol. What REALLY got to me was the whole conspiracy thing. When they started going after his family - HIS FAMILY! - I got so stressed. Seeing Sharon Stone (so young!) put in danger like that was just freaking nerve wracking. I kept yelling at the screen, "Kick their asses, Nico!" I'm sure my neighbors loved that. Seriously, the scene where he confronts Kurtz…whew. The tension was palpable, you could cut it with a knife. And that final showdown? Brutal, but honestly, satisfying. I'm not going to pretend it's some intellectual, deep movie, because it's not. It's a straight-up '80s action flick. But the rawness of it, Seagal's intensity, and the fact that Nico actually seemed like a person with a life and people he cared about, really sucked me in. I felt his rage, his protectiveness, his frustration with the system. Maybe it was the late hour, maybe it was the pizza I was stress eating, but it definitely got an emotional reaction outta me. Anyone else seen this one? What did you think? Was I just overly sensitive, or did Nico get to you too?
