Tiny Detail That Still Freaks Me Out in The Vanishing
Okay, so I've probably seen "The Vanishing" (original, of course!) like... a dozen times? And it still messes with me. But this time, I picked up on something small that makes the ending even more disturbing. It's when Rex is in Raymond's car, after Raymond finally admits he knows what happened to Saskia. Raymond's being all calm and matter-of-fact about the whole thing, right? But look at his HANDS. He keeps fiddling with the rearview mirror. Like, obsessively adjusting it. It's such a small, insignificant gesture, but to me, it screams guilt and control. Like he's checking to make sure Rex is still compliant, still going along with his twisted game. It's almost like he's practicing what he's seen on screen. Then, remember the chloroform scene? So many people talk about the horror of what Rex does. But I was thinking - when Raymond explains how he practiced the abduction so many times, did he also practice on himself? Like, did he desensitize himself to the feeling and the fear ahead of time with smaller doses? It would explain how completely emotionless he is when describing it all. He's already gone through it himself, in his own twisted prep. Idk maybe I'm reading too much into it but that's the kinda detail that haunts me long after the credits roll. Anyone else notice little details like that that amp up the creep factor?
