Gorillas in the Mist: A Bit Slow, But Damn Compelling

Okay, so I finally got around to watching 'Gorillas in the Mist' the other night. I knew the basics of Dian Fossey's story, but seeing it laid out like that was...intense. Sigourney Weaver absolutely nails the transformation from slightly awkward researcher to total gorilla mama bear (pun intended, sorry!). The scenery is stunning – those misty mountains are practically another character in the film. Honestly, the cinematography alone is worth the watch. My main gripe (and you guys know I'm all about pacing) is that the middle act kinda drags. There are so many scenes of her just...observing. Which, yeah, that's what she did, but dramatically it felt a little repetitive, you know? They could've trimmed some of that and tightened up the tension leading to the poaching conflicts. The relationship with Bob Campbell (Bryan Brown) felt a bit tacked on too, like they needed a romance subplot even though it didn't fully serve the main story. Maybe I'm biased against that trope, idk. But the ending...wow. That final act just hits you like a ton of bricks. The escalation of violence, the betrayal, and the sheer frustration Fossey feels at the senseless slaughter...it's heartbreaking. Plus, the film doesn't shy away from showing her own increasing ruthlessness in her fight to protect the gorillas. She becomes almost as territorial as the animals she loves. It's a powerful, if unsettling, depiction of conservation efforts. Overall, I'd say it's a worthwhile watch, especially if you're into biopics or environmental themes. Just be prepared for a bit of a slow burn in the middle. It's a bit dated, for sure, but the core message still resonates, and Weaver's performance is truly something special. Anyone else have thoughts on this one?
