Moonwalker: Is it even a movie? Discuss.
Okay, so I just finished watching Moonwalker. Again. I swear, this movie is a fever dream distilled into 90 minutes. I don't even know WHAT to call it. Is it a music video? A short film collection? A super weird vanity project? All of the above? Seriously. The 'Smooth Criminal' segment alone is worth the price of admission (if you were paying to see it, which, I found it on some obscure streaming service). The way they animate that whole scene is legitimately cool, and Michael's dance moves are, obviously, insane. But then you've got the 'Speed Demon' claymation bit... which... okay, it's creative! But also, kinda terrifying? And Joe Pesci as Mr. Big?? Peak villain cheesiness. Like, so over-the-top it loops back around to being good. The whole 'save the children' plot is... yeah, WEIRD now, especially knowing what came out later about MJ. Hard to watch some parts, I'm not gonna lie. I mean, it's fascinating, visually arresting, and utterly bizarre all at the same time. I think what gets me is how unapologetically Michael Jackson it is. Like, every single frame is just pure concentrated MJ energy. It's both incredibly impressive and slightly unsettling. The robot transformation? The literal star children? It is some serious stuff, right? Did anyone else have this on VHS growing up? I feel like it warped my little brain. I can't decide if it's brilliant or completely bonkers. Maybe both? Anyone else grapple with this weird movie-thing? Anyway, watching late at night, and had to share my thoughts. What do you think about Moonwalker? Is it redeemable weirdness, or just... weird? Let's discuss!
