Okay, Okay, I Watched 'The Great Outdoors' Again (Don't Judge)

Alright, I'll admit it. I revisited 'The Great Outdoors' last night. Look, sometimes you just need a cinematic palate cleanser, something aggressively… mid. And this movie fits the bill perfectly. As a piece of '80s cinema, it's fascinating, if only for what it isn't. It isn't trying to be high art. It isn't subtle. It just is. John Candy is, well, John Candy, doing his beleaguered everyman schtick as Chet Ripley. You know the drill: trying to have a wholesome family vacation that's constantly derailed by Dan Aykroyd's obnoxious Roman Craig. The whole thing is a predictable trainwreck, but the train is fueled by cheap beer and exploding marshmallows, so oddly compelling. And that's the weird thing about it. Is it good? Objectively, probably not. The gags are broad, the plot is thinner than lake ice in July, and the character development is practically nonexistent. Annette Bening is criminally underused as Roman's wife. But there are moments... the raccoon scene, the gargantuan steak challenge (Lord, the steak), the waterskiing fiasco... they're all so ridiculously over-the-top that they somehow circle back around to being... entertaining? It's like junk food for the brain. You know it's terrible for you, but you can't stop shoving it in your face. I think the core appeal is simple: it's about family dysfunction, but with a comedic veneer thick enough to insulate you from any real emotional impact. It also showcases the culture clash between the "new money" of Roman and the "old money" of Chet, who wants nothing more than fishing and togetherness. The ending is as predictable as the sun rising but that doesn't make it bad, just... easy. So, would I recommend it? Probably not. Unless you're in the mood for some pure, unadulterated '80s cheese and a hearty dose of John Candy's sweat. Then, maybe. Just don't expect a Citizen Kane. Expect a large, slightly burnt marshmallow. Then dial your expectations back a bit... and enjoy. Or don't. I'm not your dad.
