OMG, Celeste's outfits in 'My Stepmother is an Alien'?!
Okay, so I just re-watched 'My Stepmother is an Alien' (don't judge, it's a classic guilty pleasure!), and I NEED to talk about Celeste's clothes. Seriously, for someone who's supposed to be clueless about Earth fashion, she brought some serious looks! That shimmering gold dress she wears when she first arrives? Iconic. It's so '80s, but in a way where it's still kinda timeless. Plus, the little details, like the way it catches the light... Chef's kiss. I kept thinking, did they get her wardrobe from a lost Thierry Mugler collection or something? And don't even get me STARTED on her later outfits. The pink power suit? The oversized sweaters paired with mini skirts? It's all so perfectly over-the-top and yet somehow still chic. I'm not sure what her planet's fashion sense is like, but they clearly have some serious style going on. I mean, maybe the whole 'rescue the planet' thing was just an excuse to show off her wardrobe? Lol. I also loved how they used the clothes to visually represent her character's journey...like when she starts wearing those tamer, earthier tones to blend in more with Steve's world, it's such a good subtle marker of her growing affection. It's not just about looking good (though she definitely does), it's about storytelling too. I feel like more sci-fi movies could take a leaf out of this film's book in using costuming to help build the character instead of just being functional. Honestly, even if the plot is kinda cheesy, the outfits alone are worth watching the movie for. If anyone knows where I could find a dupe of that gold dress for under $100, please let me know! My closet is begging for it. Maybe I'm just extra sensitive to how costumes affect a movie, but Celeste's definitely bumped this one up an extra star in my book. Thoughts?
