"My Stepmother Is an Alien": Hear Me Out, It's Subversive (Kind Of)

Okay, rom-com lovers, let's talk about 1988's My Stepmother Is an Alien. I KNOW, I KNOW, it's cheesy as all get out. And yeah, Kim Basinger's wig deserves its own supporting actor credit. But hear me out, because I think, in its own weird, 80s way, this movie is dabbling in something kinda... subversive? My theory is that Celeste isn't just clueless about human customs, she's actively choosing to misinterpret them as a way to subtly mock our weird, patriarchal society. Think about it. She's got advanced alien tech, can manipulate reality, and basically has superpowers. She could easily blend in flawlessly if she wanted to. But instead, she uses her powers to highlight the absurdity of human behavior. Like how she completely inverts gender roles in the diner scene? Or the way she literally takes Steve's compliment of her being "easy on the eyes" as a literal command to inflict (minor) pain. It's like she's holding up a funhouse mirror to our values, and the result is gloriously awkward and hilarious. And let's be honest, the whole "save the planet by manipulating a lonely scientist" plotline is a pretty clever commentary on how women are often forced to use their charm and intelligence to get what they need in a world run by men (even if it is, you know, an alien planet in this case). It's all done with a wink and a nod, of course, but I definitely think there's more going on beneath the surface than just the standard "fish-out-of-water" trope. I mean, the finger? That's gotta be some kind of statement on male obsession with women's bodies, right? Maybe I'm reading too much into it (and clearly, I am), but that's why I love movies like this. They're superficially silly, but they also offer little glimpses of something sharper and more insightful underneath. What do you guys think? Am I just overthinking or is there more to Celeste than meets the eye...finger?
