Tequila Sunrise: Underrated Gem or Just Pretty Faces?

Okay horror fiends, hear me out. I know, Tequila Sunrise (1988) isn't exactly dripping with blood and guts, BUT I've been on a Jon Voight kick lately (sue me, I love Anaconda!) and decided to revisit this one. I remember liking it as a kid because, let's be real, young Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell are... distracting. But watching it now, I'm kinda wondering if it's more than just a visually appealing, sun-drenched crime thing. I'm especially curious about the whole vibe between Mac (Gibson) and Nick (Russell). They're supposed to be best friends, but the tension is THICK. Like, betrayal-brewing thick. Is it just me, or did anyone else get the feeling that Nick was almost hoping Mac would screw up so he'd have an excuse to take him down? I mean, he's constantly scrutinizing him. And Michelle Pfeiffer? Gorgeous of course, but her character, Jo Ann, felt a little… underdeveloped. Was she REALLY that naive about Mac's past, or was she playing a game too? So, my question for the group: Is Tequila Sunrise a genuinely good thriller with interesting character dynamics, or is it just a visually stylish movie that coasts on the charisma of its leads and some pretty scenery? I'm leaning towards underrated, but I'm open to being convinced otherwise! Also, what did you guys think of that ending? Did Mac actually manage to stay clean, or was that just wishful thinking on everyone's part? And finally, anyone else think Raul Julia was totally wasted in that tiny part? RIP, legend. He deserved way more screen time!
