Poltergeist III: Kane's Closet or Carol Anne's Mirror-verse?
Okay, so I know Poltergeist III isn't exactly winning any awards (lol), but I've been thinking about something. It's the mirrors. We ALL know it's the mirrors. But bear with me. Everyone always talks about how Kane is trapping Carol Anne in the mirror world. But what if, and this is a big what if, it’s her creating it? Hear me out! Remember when Carol Anne is first at her Aunt & Uncle's? She's clearly freaked out – new city, creepy building, no Robbie or Dana around. Massive life change, ya know? What if all the mirror stuff isn't just Kane pulling tricks, but a manifestation of her own fear and anxieties playing out? Like, maybe that ghastly Kane reflection is a representation of how she sees herself in that stressful situation? The building itself is a symbol of isolation and disconnect – just a huge glass cage full of people. And all those mannequins? All lifeless and staring... that's CLASSIC anxiety material! And the clothes! Nobody talks about the eighties fashion in this. The big puffy sleeves on Carol Anne, the aunt's power suits, even Kane's creepy collar. Are the costumes just of their time, or reflecting the rigid conformity of the lifestyle Carol Ann is forced into? Everything's so structured, so unnatural. Are the clothes clues, or just the filmmakers' weird love of all things 80s? I know, I know, it's a flimsy theory on a not-so-amazing sequel, but I just can't shake the thought that there's something deeper going on with the mirrors than just Kane being a supernatural creep. Maybe it’s not just a demonic takeover, but a girl's fractured psyche reflected back at her. Thoughts?
