Woah. 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' - He's kinda a jerk, right?
Okay so, just finished watching 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being'. Hadn't even heard of it before randomly finding it on one of the streaming services. Definitely not a light watch, lol. Pretty heavy stuff. This Tomas guy... man, he's a complex dude. Successful surgeon, lives in Prague, and seriously cannot commit for the life of him. Like, the whole 'sexual relationships vs. love' thing he has going on is a whole philosophy. I'm not sure I buy it, though. I felt REALLY bad for Tereza. Juliette Binoche was phenomenal, by the way. She's so vulnerable and just clearly wants to be loved, and Tomas, well, he brings her back from the countryside but then keeps sleeping with other women! I get that he's "honest" about it, but like... c'mon dude. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but that's kinda messed up. Especially when she's so insecure. The scene where she's taking photos of him while he's sleeping - so powerful, you can just feel her need for reassurance. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing. I think the ending was supposed to be bittersweet? They find some kind of peace, but it also felt kinda tragic, you know? The cinematography was really beautiful, too, especially the scenes in the Czech countryside. Actually, I don't even know who directed this - gotta look that up. Anyway, thoughts? Anyone else see this and have a similar reaction to Tomas's… let's say 'lifestyle choices'?
