Uh, Did Anyone Else Find "The Little Devil" Hilariously Problematic?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Little Devil" (Il piccolo diavolo), and I'm...conflicted? I went in expecting Roberto Benigni to be his usual manic self, and he delivered, alright. He plays the literal devil, and much of the film is him tormenting Walter Matthau's Father Maurice. There were bits that genuinely made me laugh, like the whole scene where Benigni is imitating Maurice and his mannerisms. Gold! But a lotta the jokes haven't aged well, to say the least. Like, some of the jokes feel bordering on offensive, especially his treatment of women. Matthau is great as the exasperated priest, no doubt. He is the only one that can keep up and even tries to reason with the little Devil, even tho the Devil is clearly having none of it. Their dynamic is what makes the whole thing tick, even if some of the jokes are kinda cringe-worthy now. It's got that late 80s Italian cinema vibe, which I usually dig, but I can't shake the feeling that it tries to be comedic but falls flat. So, my question is: am I being overly sensitive, or did anyone else find some parts of this movie kinda...yikes? I'm curious to hear other people's perspectives on this one, especially on how they percieve it in today's world. Also, anyone else think the ending felt kinda rushed? Like, they just threw in a bunch of crazy stuff and hoped it would stick? Maybe I missed something...
