Okay, "The Thin Blue Line" - Was Adams REALLY that clueless?!

Okay so, I just watched "The Thin Blue Line" with Sarah and Ben (movie night!) and I'm still kinda reeling. I know it's like, the quintessential documentary that helped free an innocent man, but something about it keeps bugging me. Namely, Randall Adams. Like, was he REALLY that blind to everything happening around him? I get that he was hitchhiking and just wanted a place to crash, but the whole scene with David Harris is just…off. Harris is clearly BAD NEWS from the second he opens his mouth. He's bragging about stolen cars and flashing a gun! And Adams just… goes along for the ride? Maybe it's just 2024 hindsight, but it seems impossible that someone could be that unaware that they're in potential danger. Or maybe he was just so desperate for a place to stay that he ignored all the red flags?? So my theory is this: maybe Adams wasn't completely innocent of everything. Like, maybe he knew Harris was shady and didn't want to get involved, but also didn't actively try to stop him? It's not like he pulled the trigger, obviously, but maybe he was more complicit in the events leading up to the murder than he lets on. IDK, the way he tells the story just feels a little too…clean. It's almost TOO perfect a victim narrative. I'm just saying, it's Errol Morris and he plays with reality a lot. Don't get me wrong, Harris is clearly a psychopath and deserves to be locked up, but I can't shake this feeling that Adams might have been holding back a little. What do you guys think? Am I being too cynical?
