Earth Girls Are Easy: Furry Aliens and Surprisingly Good Sound Design?
Okay, so I just rewatched "Earth Girls Are Easy" and, man, it's a trip. I mean, the plot is pure 80s wacky – aliens crash land, get shaved, and learn about Earth dating from Geena Davis. But beyond the neon and the Jim Carrey madness (seriously, his Zeebo is iconic), I found myself actually paying attention to the sound design. Like, the alien spaceship noises? They're not just your stock sci-fi bleeps and bloops. There's a real layered quality to them, almost organic in a weird way. And the musical numbers, while cheesy, are surprisingly well-mixed. I was particularly struck by the scene where they're getting their fur shaved off. The sounds of the clippers combined with the aliens' whimpers and laughs... it's almost unsettling, but also kind of hilarious? I know that's a weird observation, but I think it's a testament to how the sound guys were trying to create a unique sonic landscape, even within a film that's otherwise known for its visual absurdity. Also, can we talk about Julie Brown as Candy? Her voice alone is a weapon of comedy, but the way they mic'd her and layered in the music during her "'Cause I'm A Blonde" number is pretty impressive. They really managed to make her sound larger than life. It's definitely a movie that doesn't take itself seriously, but that doesn't mean the technical aspects are lacking. Maybe I'm just looking too deep into a bubblegum movie, but I think there's some real craft hiding beneath the surface. Anyone else notice this, or am I going crazy? One last thing: the scene where they first arrive and hit the pool. I think that splash noise is so iconic! Anyway, it's probably just me, but the movie is on Tubi if anyone dares to check it out. let me know if you hear what i hear!
