Earth Girls Are Easy...and Surprisingly Has a Soundtrack That Slaps?
Okay, so I'm gonna be real, I wasn't expecting much from "Earth Girls Are Easy." I mean, it's peak 80s cheese, right? Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum (when he was even weirder!), aliens shaving their fur off...it all screams camp. But I watched it recently and was actually kinda digging it, especially the music. The credited composer is Ira Newborn (weird name, I know) and while it doesn't scream 'iconic score', it's perfectly suited for the movie. It's got this upbeat, synth-heavy playfulness that really works. Also, there's a bunch of actual songs peppered throughout by The B-52s, Deee-Lite, and even The Pointer Sisters. That pool scene where they first shave the aliens and are all dancing around? Pure earworm material, honestly. It's not something I'd necessarily listen to on its own, but damn, it elevates the entire movie. And come to think of it, Ira also did "Ferris Beuller's Day Off," so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised that I like it. I think what really gets me is how the music blends seamlessly with the campy, colorful visuals. It never takes itself too seriously, which in turn makes the movie even more enjoyable. I'm not saying it's groundbreaking score work, but it's definitely underrated. Anyone else feel this way, or am I just losing it? I love hearing your guys' opinions on this movie. Also, special shoutout in the movie's score for the use of 'Cause I'm a Blonde' by Julie Brown (which by the way, she's actually the composer of that track, not Newborn!). This song makes the montage so perfect!
