Just Watched "Night of the Demons" (1988) - Practical FX Gold!
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Night of the Demons" (1988). I knew going in it was gonna be cheesy 80s horror, but I was really curious about the practical effects, and man, they did NOT disappoint! Seriously, Angela's transformation stuff, especially when she's like, spitting out that lipstick... kinda gross, but SO well done for the time. You can tell they really went all-in on the practicals, and it gives the movie a certain charm that's hard to replicate with CGI, even if some of it looks dated now. I was kind of laughing, but also impressed? Does that make sense? And the sound design! The use of silence and then those sudden, jarring noises really adds to the creep factor. There's a scene where Helen is trying to escape, and everything is almost muffled, and then BAM, a creepy giggle. Gave me the chills! The acting is... well, let's just say it's not winning any Oscars, lol. But Linnea Quigley as Suzanne is a total scream queen icon - she's clearly having a blast. I think the movie knows exactly what it is, and it embraces the ridiculousness, which makes it a fun watch. Honestly, the plot is pretty thin – basically, a bunch of teens unleash a demon in a haunted house. But that's not really the point, is it? It's all about the atmosphere, the gore, and the over-the-top characters. Like, the whole dance scene with Angela? What even was that? But I loved it. So, yeah, if you're looking for high art, this ain't it. But if you want a good dose of 80s horror camp with some genuinely impressive practical effects, "Night of the Demons" is worth checking out. I'd even consider it a tiny bit scary, even now, but the cheesiness kind of cancels it out.
