The Seventh Sign: Underrated Apocalypse Score & a Wild Theory

Alright folks, HughesReviews here. I know it's not exactly a prestige movie, but I've been thinking about "The Seventh Sign" (1988) a lot lately – specifically, the score by Jack Nitzsche. Seriously underrated stuff. It's got this haunting, almost liturgical feel to it during Abby's (Demi Moore) more introspective scenes, then just explodes with dread during the 'end of days' bits. I actually think it elevates the film way beyond what the script maybe deserves, haha. Anyway, it got me thinking about something I've never really seen discussed much. What if Avi (the David Carson character!) wasn't actually trying to bring about the apocalypse? Okay, hear me out! He goes around doing these awful things – the blood rain, etc. But what if he's just... trying to trigger the final judgment, hoping it will ultimately lead to something better? Maybe he believes that humanity is already so far gone that a clean slate is the only option. He's a fallen angel, right? Maybe he realizes he screwed up and this is his own messed-up redemption arc. Think about it: he does seem conflicted at times. And he certainly doesn't celebrate when Abby sacrifices herself. He looks genuinely gutted, not triumphant. And her sacrifice does stop everything, suggesting that maybe, just maybe, he was looking for a specific trigger, a specific act of true selflessness, all along. Kinda like a failsafe? I know, it's probably reading way too much into a late 80's supernatural thriller, but it's just a thought I had. Anyone else got a soft spot for this movie, or any weird theories of their own? Let me know!
