"The Seventh Sign" - Underrated Apocalypse or Just Messy?

Okay, so I recently re-watched The Seventh Sign (1988), that Demi Moore end-of-the-world flick. I remember being kinda creeped out by it as a kid, and honestly, some of the imagery STILL holds up. The whole blood-raining thing? Brrr. But re-watching it as an editor now, I'm torn. The concept is great – the idea that these biblical signs are unfolding in a very grounded, almost mundane way, and that Moore's character Abby is somehow central... that's gold. But the pacing, man, the pacing! Some scenes linger far too long, especially in the middle act. I feel like they could've trimmed a lot of fat and really ramped up the tension. And what's with the boarder guy (David Carson)? Jürgen Prochnow is obviously going for that 'enigmatic stranger' vibe, but sometimes it just comes across as… blank? I'm not sure if it's the direction or the acting, but it felt like a missed opportunity to make him properly unsettling. Anyways, my question is this: does the movie's messy structure and uneven performances ultimately undermine the genuinely interesting apocalyptic ideas? Or does its visual style and the inherent weirdness of the plot elevate it above other late-80s thrillers? I'm leaning towards the former, but I am curious if anyone else feels differently, or perhaps sees the film in a different light. Also, was I the only one who found that whole 'sacrifice' ending a bit… rushed? Could've used another pass in editing that's for sure!
