Anyone else find "Ariel" super underrated?

Okay, horror peeps, I know this isn't exactly horror, but trust me, Aki Kaurismäki's "Ariel" (1988) gave me some serious anxiety. Maybe it's the bleak Finnishness of it all, but that movie just stuck with me. I saw it a while back and I still think about it. I'm not sure what qualifies the director in the minds of others, but I think that it's very good. Like, the desperation of Taisto trying to scrape together a life after losing everything...and then the whole prison escape thing?! So stressful! And the romance with Irmeli-- I was rooting for them so hard, but you just KNEW something awful was around the corner. Her performance was remarkable, like, a ray of sunshine in the darkness. Was anyone else on the edge of their seat when they were trying to fix the Cadillac? I was practically yelling at the screen. It's so raw and the ending is a little bittersweet (no spoilers!), but it stayed with me for sure after seeing it. So, my question is this: does anyone else feel like "Ariel" deserves more love? I feel like it explores similar themes of social anxiety and desperation that a lot of horror movies do, just in a much quieter, more realistic way. What did you guys think of the ending? Did it feel hopeful to you, or just...meh? I'm curious to get your thoughts, especially if you tend to lean toward foreign films and thrillers!
