Clint Eastwood's 'Bird' - Anyone else think it's underrated?
Hey everyone! Priya here, back with another deep dive into international (well, technically US, but feels global to me, haha) cinema. I just rewatched 'Bird' (1988), Clint Eastwood's biopic about Charlie Parker, and I'm left wondering why it doesn't get talked about more. I mean, Forest Whitaker is incredible as Bird. He REALLY captures that chaotic genius. I know some people find biopics kind of formulaic, but I thought Eastwood did a pretty good job showcasing Parker's struggles without romanticizing the addiction. The scenes with him and Chan (Diane Venora) were absolutely heartbreaking. Their love felt so real and raw, even amidst all the chaos. The music, obviously, is stunning. And the way they integrated it into the narrative, showing Parker's creative process... wow. Okay, so my question is: am I alone in thinking this is a seriously underrated film? Is there anyone else who particularly connected with Chan's character? It felt like her story was so important to telling Parker's, but she often gets overshadowed. Or maybe I'm just overly sentimental, ha! Let me know your thoughts!
