Alice (1988) - More Than Just a Trippy Kid's Movie?

Okay, so I just re-watched Jan Švankmajer's 'Alice' (1988). I saw it when I was, like, way too young and it scared the actual daylight out of me. I still find it pretty unsettling, but now I'm thinking there's way more going on than just creepy puppets and decaying taxidermy. I mean, obviously, it's an interpretation of 'Alice in Wonderland,' but Švankmajer takes it to such a… visceral level. My theory? I think it's a representation of childhood trauma, or at least a child's experience of a really isolating, perhaps even abusive, environment. Think about it: Alice is constantly being undermined and manipulated. The White Rabbit is literally falling apart but still demanding she follow him. The Mad Hatter just seems… frustrated and cruel. And everything is decaying, broken, or repurposed in a slightly wrong way. It's like Alice's mind is trying to make sense of something awful by creating this bizarre, distorted reality that feels real to her. Remember the scene when she's trying to sew herself back together?? That seriously got to me, talk about feeling like you're falling apart. Also, the fact that everything is so tactile and… real, even though it's clearly not, makes it even more disturbing. It's NOT a happy fantasy like Disney. This is Alice's internal landscape being projected, and it’s seriously messed up. What do you guys reckon? Am I reading too much into it, or does it resonate with anyone else? I'd love to hear some other takes. I’m not saying it's definitely about childhood trauma, but something about the oppressive atmosphere and Alice's constant struggle just screams more than just 'whimsy gone wrong'. And honestly, as someone who's always drawn to character performance, I think Kristýna Kohoutová as Alice does an incredible job portraying this quiet, determined sense of confusion and resilience, even when she's clearly terrified.
