Waxwork (1988) - Seriously Underappreciated or Just Weird?

Okay, international film fans, Priya here! Been diving deep into some 80s horror lately and stumbled across "Waxwork" (1988). I've seen so much hype about it but I'm still unsure what to think. The whole setup – rich kids, a creepy wax museum where you literally enter the exhibits – is so bizarre. The practical effects kinda freaked me out, like when China attacks the Frankenstein monster, it was hilarious and terrifying. But I'm wondering if I am missing something or if it's just a gloriously cheesy ride. The anthology format felt a bit disjointed, even for an 80s horror flick. Did anyone else feel the same way? My main question is, do you think the film tried to be subversive? I'm thinking especially about the Marquis de Sade scene, when Mark and Sarah come across the Marquis de Sade's waxwork. It seems to make a deeper statement on morality and corruption than the rest of the movie. Could this make the film more serious? Did they try to put depth in the film on a budget? I would love to hear your opinions! Anyone else catch any subtle (or not-so-subtle) meaning hidden in this film? Let's discuss it!
