Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School: Underrated Gem or Guilty Pleasure?
Alright, let's talk Ghoul School. I know, I know, it's a Scooby-Doo movie. And a direct-to-video one at that. But hear me out. There's something genuinely charming and, dare I say, smart about this flick that elevates it above the usual Scooby fare. The premise alone is gold: Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy (okay, Scrappy's a minus, but bear with me) end up as gym teachers at a school for monster girls. Like, Dracula's daughter, a werewolf girl, a frankenstein's monster's daughter. It's ridiculous, and it knows it. What I appreciate is how the movie plays with horror tropes without being cynical. The monster girls are genuinely likable, each with their own distinct personality. And the overarching plot, with Revolta and the Grim Creeper, isn't just some throwaway monster-of-the-week scenario. Plus, some of the visual gags are legitimately inspired – the Grim Creeper's transformations are surprisingly well-animated for a DTV feature. Remember that scene where he turns into a giant spider? Still gives me the creeps a little, gotta admit. Now, it's not perfect, obviously. Scrappy is still there, being Scrappy. And the songs are…well, they're catchy, but not exactly Sondheim. But as far as Scooby-Doo goes, Ghoul School is a high watermark. It's got heart, humor, and just the right amount of spooky. Worth a watch if you're looking for something a little different from the usual Mystery Incorporated formula. What are your thoughts? Am I alone in my love for this spooky school adventure or is it just nostalgia clouding my judgement?
