BTTF2: Underrated Score and a Nifty Time Loop Theory
Alright everyone, HughesReviews back at it. Been revisiting 'Back to the Future Part II' lately and, man, does Alan Silvestri get overlooked in this one. Obviously, the first film has the iconic theme, but the way he scores the chaotic nature of the multiple timelines in the sequel? Genius. Specifically, listen to the cues during the Hill Valley sequence when Marty's trying to get the almanac back from Biff. It's frantic, playful, and even a little unsettling, perfectly mirroring the escalating stakes. Speaking of timelines, I've been nursing this little theory for a while. What if, and hear me out, what if Doc and Marty always went to 2015? Like, not in a predestination way, but a Bootstrap Paradox kind of thing? My reasoning is mainly based on Jennifer. She's obviously a crucial part of the 2015 trip, needing to be in that future house. But she's also there mainly because of Marty's actions. So, did Doc know, consciously or subconsciously, that taking them to 2015 was integral to the entire time loop? It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg scenario, I know. But consider this: Doc always modifies the DeLorean after their first adventure. Maybe there's something inherent in the repairs, or even just his knowledge gained from that first trip, that nudges them towards that specific future, that specific set of circumstances in 2015. It's almost like the DeLorean itself is a kind of...time-traveling compass pointing to that date. I know it's a bit crackpot, but it's been bouncing around in my head. Let me know what you guys think! Anyone else appreciate Silvestri's work on the second film as much as I do? Also, is it just me, or are the hoverboards in this movie still incredibly cool, even if they aren't real?
