Ghostbusters II: Slimer's Back (and So Are My Kids' Questions!)
Okay, so we watched Ghostbusters II last night for family movie night, and it was... interesting. I hadn't seen it in years, and I remembered it being way scarier than it actually is, haha. The kids (ages 7 and 10) were mostly fine, although the whole Vigo the Carpathian painting freaked my youngest out a little. We had to pause so I could explain that it was just a guy in makeup and not a 'real' scary monster living in a painting. Crisis averted! I actually forgot how funny it is. Rick Moranis is, as always, a comedic genius as Louis Tully. The courtroom scene where they're trying to prove ghosts exist is just gold. The slime also isn't as scary as I remember. The whole musical number when they are using the Statue of Liberty to deliver positive energy is just fun, and not too scary for little ones. I think the thing that struck me most this time around was how much the movie is about, like, New York and how people are always in a bad mood! I didn't really pick up on that as a kid, but it's pretty obvious now. There's a line or two that might go over younger kids heads, but nothing truly inappropriate pops to mind. Overall, a fun, slightly nostalgic watch. Definitely sparked some good conversations about feelings and how negativity can affect things (which, honestly, parenting gold right there!). I'd say it's a solid choice for a family movie night if you're okay with a tiny bit of spooky stuff. Just be prepared to explain Vigo's deal!
