Ghostbusters II: Underrated or Just...Okay?

Alright cinephiles, Jordancinephile here, back with another dive into a director's filmography... Wait, hold up. Okay, so Ghostbusters II is a bit of a problem for me because Ivan Reitman's filmography as a whole lacks a serious auteur vibe. He's a solid comedy director, don't get me wrong, but he's not a Scorsese or a Kubrick. So, I often find myself judging his films on the film itself. Anyway, enough preamble. Ghostbusters II. Honestly? It's... fine. Not great, not terrible. The whole mood slime thing is kinda cool and the courtroom scene is actually hilarious. Peter MacNicol as Janosz is brilliant and steals every scene he’s in. "He is Vigo! You will call him Vigo!" - iconic. Seriously. But I think it suffers from sequelitis. It feels like they're just retreading familiar ground. The main villain, Vigo the Carpathian, is imposing but ultimately not as memorable as Gozer. And the romantic subplot with Dana and Peter feels forced. I also think the humor is a bit more broad and less witty than the first one. Like, the Statue of Liberty walking sequence is visually impressive, but narratively kinda dumb. Is it better or worse than the first one? Def worse in my opinion. I wonder if Reitman knew, or sensed, that he was kind of out of new ideas by that point. I will say that the score by Elmer Bernstein is fantastic -- it has that same iconic feel as the original. I wish the script was better. If you look at Reitman and Bernstein’s filmography, Stripes and Ghostbusters are just much better films. So yeah, overall, Ghostbusters II is a decent watch and definitely has its moments, but it doesn't quite live up to the original. Thoughts? Am I being too harsh?
