Kiki's Delivery Service Score - underrated gem?
Hey everyone, HughesReviews here. Been revisiting some classic scores lately, and Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) jumped out at me. I know, I know, it's not exactly a deep cut, but I feel like Joe Hisaishi's work on this one gets overshadowed by his more bombastic stuff like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away. Specifically, I'm curious what you all think about its simplicity. The main theme is so incredibly catchy and optimistic, perfectly capturing Kiki's initial enthusiasm. But it's also deceptively complex. There are these subtle melancholic undertones, especially in the cues when she's struggling with her powers or feeling isolated. Like, did anyone else feel a pang of sadness when she's struggling to fly after losing confidence? The music just nails that feeling of self-doubt. Do you guys think the score's understated nature actually makes it more effective in telling Kiki's story? Or is that just me being a Hisaishi fanboy? Also, any particular cues that really stand out for you? I'm partial to the one playing during the "Emergency Delivery" sequence - the tension is perfectly built, even though it's still got that inherent Hisaishi sweetness going on. Let me know your thoughts!
