The Abyss: Claustrophobia Done RIGHT (But That Ending...)
Okay, so I just rewatched The Abyss after, like, a decade and man, that movie still holds up in the claustrophobia department. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are freaking amazing, and the whole underwater rig setup is just so believably grimy and tense. The scene where Bud has to breathe the liquid oxygen? STILL gives me the chills. James Cameron really knew how to build suspense, even before he was off chasing blue people all the time. But here's my question: what do you guys REALLY think about the ending? I'm torn. On one hand, the alien reveal (or whatever they are) is visually impressive, especially for the time. The whole 'message of peace' thing feels a little…on the nose? It kinda undercuts the tension that was built so perfectly for the first two hours, ya know? Like, are we supposed to forget about the near-nuclear war thing with Coffey? It just feels…rushed. I'm not saying I wanted a bad ending, just maybe something a little less…tidy? Less preachy? Did anyone else feel like the shift in tone was jarring? Maybe its just me not liking happy endings, especially in a movie where everyone is constantly screaming lol
