Okay, Hear Me Out: "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" is Low-Key Horror

Alright horror peeps, jessmovienerd here, and I know what you're thinking. "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"? Seriously? But hear me out! Rewatched this the other night, and I'm CONVINCED it's a gateway horror film for kids. Think about it: You're suddenly insect-sized, trapped in your OWN BACKYARD, which is now a terrifying jungle filled with gigantic, predatory bugs. The bee scene ALONE gave me chills – imagine that stinger coming at you when you're the size of an ant! And the leaf blower scene? Total nightmare fuel. Poor Russ Thompson Jr. (Thomas Wilson Brown) gets it the worst, right? Falling into the flower and getting covered in pollen...Claustrophobic AF! Wayne Szalinski is supposed to be the lovable, goofy dad, but honestly, he's basically the mad scientist trope. He's so obsessed with his invention, he completely neglects his kids and nearly gets them KILLED. Talk about unreliable parents in horror! Also, the score is really creepy and effective, really elevates the tension. I'm not saying it's "The Exorcist" levels of scary, obviously. But that sense of vulnerability and the sheer scale of the dangers they face... it's definitely got horror elements. Give it a rewatch with that perspective, and tell me I'm wrong! Has anyone else got a childhood movie that is secretly more terrifying than they remember? Side note: I am aware that the director is Joe Johnston, I just could not remember it for the LIFE of me! Sorry!
