Look Who's Talking: Baby Mickey's REALLY Calling the Shots
Okay, international film buffs, let's detour to something completely different: Look Who's Talking (1989). I know, I know, it's not Kurosawa or Almodovar. But bear with me. I've been rewatching some classics lately, and this one struck me in a weird way. We all remember the talking baby gimmick, right? Bruce Willis voicing Mikey, giving us his hilariously cynical take on EVERYTHING. But what if... Mikey's not just narrating? What if he's subtly influencing events? Think about it. Molly (Kirstie Alley) is constantly drawn to James (John Travolta), the cab driver. And sure, he's charming and helpful, but there's always something more compelling in the air, like she's responding to something deeper than just gratitude. What if Mikey, even subconsciously, is nudging her towards James because he senses a better father figure than Albert? Remember the scene where Molly's arguing with Albert, and Mikey's internal monologue is basically screaming 'Get rid of him!' Maybe that internal monologue isn't so internal – maybe it's a psychic suggestion that Molly, in some Freudian way, picks up on. I'm not saying Mikey's a telepathic mastermind, lol, but maybe the movie's low-key suggesting that babies aren't just passive beings. They have needs, desires, and maybe even a primal ability to manipulate their environment to get what they want. It sounds crazy, I know! But, hey, it's more interesting than just taking it at face value as a silly 80s rom-com. Anyone else ever thought about this or am I just overthinking this because I watched it after too much chai?
