Pet Sematary (1989) - Still gives me the creeps!
Okay, so last night a bunch of us watched "Pet Sematary" (the original, obvs). It's been ages since I last saw it, and I forgot how genuinely unsettling it is! Like, yeah, it's cheesy in parts (that Zelda makeup is... something), but damn, it still gets under your skin. I think it's the whole idea of grief and what it can make people do, more than the actual zombies themselves. Gage is terrifying, obviously, but Louis's descent into utter madness is what really stuck with me this time. Victor Pascow scared the absolute crap outta me - he looks so dead! And seriously, who would bury their kid in a place called 'Pet Sematary'?! Like, red flags EVERYWHERE! Church coming back was pretty freaky too, I think they did a good job with making him look mangy and gross. I remember being really affected by the scene where Gage dies originally, it's really well done. The acting is a bit hit or miss, I'll admit. Dale Midkiff isn't exactly winning any Oscars, but Fred Gwynne as Jud Crandall is perfect. He just embodies that kindly-but-slightly-creepy old guy vibe. He's almost too friendly if you ask me. Overall I liked it way better than I thought I would! I would rate it a solid 7/10. Anyone else watch it recently? I'm curious to see if it still holds up for other people, or if its just nostalgia goggles for me. Also, are we all in agreement that the remake was... not good? I'd rather just forgot it existed altogether...
