Bill & Ted's EXCELLENT Paradoxical Adventure?!
Okay, dudes! I've been thinking about "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" (1989), and I think there's a deeper layer than just 'be excellent to each other.' We ALL know Rufus arrives to help them pass history, right? But, what if Rufus showing up ISN'T just some random act of temporal kindness? What if his ENTIRE EXISTENCE, everything he knows, hinges on Bill and Ted staying together and forming Wyld Stallyns? Think about it. Rufus is from a utopian future BUILT on their music. If Ted gets shipped off to military school, Wyld Stallyns never jams, the future doesn't happen... including Rufus! So that makes his mission a self-preservation loop, right? Like, he HAS to make sure they succeed, otherwise...poof! No Rufus. It's kind of a bootstrap paradox, isn't it? Like, who sent him to the past in the first place if the future he's from doesn't exist without him doing it? My brain hurts like trying to understand the electoral college, ha! And the movie never REALLY addresses it. They're too busy saying "Whoa!" and collecting historical figures. It's possible to make other bands, sure, but what if it's something specific about these two? When they combine their minds, something special hapens that brings together the world! I wonder about that. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but next time you're watching, really pay attention to Rufus's motivations. It's not just about helping some random high schoolers; it's about him literally ensuring his own existence. "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" indeed... or are they? ;-)
