Turner & Hooch: Okay, Hear Me Out...

Alright, alright, I know what you're thinking: 'Priya, what are you doing reviewing a buddy cop movie from 1989?' But seriously, I was flipping through channels the other night and Turner & Hooch was on, and I couldn't help but get sucked in. It's so... endearingly goofy. Tom Hanks, pre-Oscar glory, is so uptight as Detective Turner, and Hooch, the giant slobbery dog, is just... Hooch. The plot is pretty standard cop stuff, but the dynamic between them is what makes it watchable. Plus, there's something about the late 80's/early 90's aesthetic that is pure comfort food. I will admit, the 'dog helps solve crime' thing is a well-worn trope, but I think what separates Turner & Hooch is Tom Hanks committing fully to the absurdity of it all. Remember that scene where Hooch basically redecorates Turner's apartment with slobber and destruction? Classic! And the whole love story thing with the vet... okay, maybe that was a bit much. But honestly, it's a fun, lighthearted movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously – something I definitely appreciate these days. The ending is... well, let's just say it’s a choice. I won't spoil it, but it definitely left me feeling a bit bummed out as a kid but older now, I see it adds a needed layer of realism to what would have been a too-neat, too-perfect ending. Like, life isn't always a happy ending, even in a buddy-cop comedy. I’m wondering if anyone else has a soft spot for this one? Or am I just blinded by nostalgia and Tom Hanks’ charm? Maybe it's not going to be on my list of great international cinema, but it’s definitely a fun watch when you want to turn your brain off and just enjoy some classic 80s cheese. Anyone else agree? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts!
