Uncle Buck: Still Holds Up (Mostly)

Okay, so I re-watched Uncle Buck the other day. Remember 'Uncle Buck'? Classic, right? I mostly wanted to see if it still held up, and honestly, it kinda does. John Candy is perfect as Buck, obviously. The way he interacts with the kids, especially Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly) is so funny but also kinda sweet. Like, the scene where he grills her boyfriend Bug is iconic for a reason. You just KNOW that Bug's life flashed before his eyes lol. I think what makes it work is that, even though Buck is a total slob and clearly not equipped to be a babysitter, he actually genuinely cares. He tries his best, even if his 'best' involves things like giant pancakes and questionable driving. And the ending, with him finally getting his act together a little bit? Heartwarming (but still funny, of course). That being said, some parts are dated. I mean, the treatment of women in general, especially Buck's girlfriend Chanice, is a little cringe now. She's great, but there's some casual sexism sprinkled in that definitely wouldn't fly today. Also, the whole 'creepy clown' thing? Yeah, that was never really funny to me, just kinda unsettling. Overall, though, Uncle Buck is still a genuinely funny and heartwarming movie. It relies heavily on John Candy's charm and comedic timing, but it works. If you're looking for something nostalgic and a little bit silly, give it a re-watch...just maybe skip the clown scene.
