OMG "The War of the Roses" - I can't even with this movie!
Okay, so I just watched "The War of the Roses" (1989) and I'm still processing, tbh. Like, I knew it was supposed to be a dark comedy about a divorce, but WOW. Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas KILLED it. The first half makes you think they're just a normal, if slightly pretentious, couple. And then Barbara starts wanting out, and things escalate SO quickly. The scene where she's just...cataloging all of Oliver's annoying habits at dinner?! I felt that in my soul, you know? Like, we've all been there, right? But the sheer bitterness of it all! Using their possessions, their kids, everything as weapons? It was horrifying and hilarious at the same time. The ending...OMG THE ENDING. I literally gasped. I won't spoil it, but let's just say it's not sunshine and rainbows. I kinda felt bad for them even though they were both being completely awful. Like, how does a relationship even get to that point? It's terrifying! And Danny DeVito as the lawyer? He was the perfect cynical observer. I spent half the movie laughing nervously and the other half feeling deeply uncomfortable. It's definitely not a feel-good movie, that's for sure. It makes u think about relationships and how easily love can turn to hate...scary stuff! It's messed up, but in a really compelling way. I'm still not sure if I loved it or hated it lol, but I definitely can't stop thinking about it. Has anyone else seen it? What did you think? Is it just me, or is this movie seriously disturbing? I think someone needs to watch it to tell me their thoughts, I could be going insane with this one! Maybe it's bc I've been married forever, but I felt like I was watching a train wreck. I couldn't turn away!
