All Dogs Go to Heaven...but should they????

Okay, so I re-watched All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) the other day, and man, it's way darker than I remembered as a kid. Like, a dog gangster gets murdered by another dog gangster! In New Orleans! That's a heck of a premise for a kids' movie, right? Honestly, the world-building is surprisingly cool, even if it's kinda glossed-over. This whole concept of dogs automatically going to heaven, regardless of how they lived, is ripe for exploration. Like, what's the vetting process REALLY? Is there a dog bureaucracy up there? Are there loopholes? Charlie B. Barkin is clearly a dirtbag, but he's automatically in the pearly gates? I'm thinking fanfic material here, people. Then there's Carface Carruthers. Pure evil. He's a Doberman Pincher and, you know, plays into every negative stereotype about that breed. But in a way that's really creepy. But I'm also thinking, what's his backstory? What warped him like that. Anyway, the heaven/hell implications are pretty rad for a Don Bluth film. I also wondered about the whole 'orphaned human child who can talk to animals' trope. In this film, it is named Anne-Marie. Can all children do this? What dictates who and when they can talk to dogs? If so, a person can gain a lot of capital by doing this - but the film touches on it. And the themes about love, sacrifice, and redemption are classic Disney. So the whole thing just makes me think about the larger implications of it all! But overall, I gotta say, it's a nostalgic trip. It's got some seriously haunting imagery if you look at it from an adult perspective. And the heaven thing still bugs me, LOL. What is up with that? Seriously, where is the justice? I mean, Carface nearly drowns an orphan, which means he probably goes to heaven too... Maybe there's a doggy version of purgatory? I NEED ANSWERS, BLUTH!
