Weekend at Bernie's: Still Hilarious After All These Years (and a Little Disturbing)
Okay, so I just rewatched 'Weekend at Bernie's' for like, the millionth time. Don't judge! It's a classic. And every time I see it, I catch something new. This time, I was really focusing on how committed Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy were to their roles. They really sell the whole 'Weekend at Dead Bernie' charade. Like, the scene where they're pulling him on the beach with the sail and he lands face-first in the sand? The commitment to the bit! I almost choked on my popcorn. But seriously, thinking about it now, the whole concept is pretty dark, right? Like, they're toting around a dead body to avoid getting in trouble. And Bernie did try to have them killed! I guess it's the over-the-top slapstick that makes you forget the kind of twisted premise. And honestly, Terry Kiser's performance as Bernie is, like, iconic in its own way. He doesn't even move and he's still hilarious. The sunglasses definitely help. Also, I'm convinced that the director (whoever they are!) just let them improvise a lot of those scenes. I mean, the way they react to the dog humping Bernie's leg? Pure gold. You can't write that stuff. Okay, maybe you can... but their delivery is what makes it. My only real question is: did they ever truly get therapy after that weekend? Because, yikes. Anyway, I know it's not cinematic perfection, but 'Weekend at Bernie's' is just one of those movies I can always rely on for a good laugh. Maybe I can convince my friends to watch it with me next weekend... though I might need to warn them about the, uh, 'body positivity' first LOL.
