"See No Evil..." - Dumb Fun or Underappreciated Gem? My Hot Take.
Alright, movie nerds, moviebuff_marc checking in. Just re-watched "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" (1989) the other night. Now, I know, I know...it's not exactly "Citizen Kane," but hear me out (pun intended? Maybe!). I've got a theory brewing. Is this movie... kinda subversive? Like, on the surface, it's a goofy slapstick comedy with Wilder and Pryor at their most chaotic. But think about it: two guys, totally marginalized by society because of their disabilities, are the only ones who literally have the pieces to solve the crime. The 'seeing' and 'hearing' public – the cops, the bystanders – are all clueless. Remember the scene where Wally's trying to describe the killer's motorcycle and he's all over the place with the sounds? And Dave is trying to lip-read everyone but gets it completely wrong? It's played for laughs, sure, but it's also a commentary on how we dismiss people who aren't “normal.” We just assume they're incompetent. Maybe I reading too much into it. I am a Gen-Xer after all, raised on cynicism. And I will admit, the whole Eve/Kirgo plot doesn't really hold up to scrutiny, especially compared to the chemistry Wilder and Pryor had. But here's where my theory gets a little crazier. What if the film is a metaphor for how we all perceive reality? We only see and hear what we're conditioned to see and hear (or what we want to see and hear!), and we miss the bigger picture. Wally sees a flash of color, Dave feels the vibrations... they're picking up on things the so-called “normal” characters completely miss. Think about it. Maybe I'm reaching here, but it's more interesting than just another by-the-numbers buddy comedy, right? Final thought: it's no "Silver Streak" (which is a real classic!), but I think "See No Evil..." deserves a little more credit than it gets. It might be dumber than dirt at times, but it’s smart dirt. Anyone else feel me on this? Or am I just going senile in my old age? Let me know your thoughts!
