Is "Crimes and Misdemeanors" a Horror Movie? Discuss!
Okay, so I just finished watching Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (don't @ me, I know, I know) and I'm seriously torn. On the surface, it's like, a philosophical drama with some dark comedy thrown in. But the Judah Rosenthal storyline? Straight-up horror movie vibes! Seriously, that descent into guilt and paranoia after he has his mistress killed... THAT'S terrifying. I mean, Martin Landau KILLS it (pun intended, sorry) as Judah. The way he's constantly wrestling with his conscience, the nightmares... it's so disturbing! Especially the wedding scene at the end, when he can just... move on? Creepy AF. Compare that to the Cliff Stern (Woody Allen) plot, which is…fine. Anjelica Huston is fantastic as always, but it's mostly just him being pathetic and unrequitedly in love while making a documentary about a pompous professor. It's funny, yeah, but it almost feels like it's from a completely different movie. I guess that's the point, though? The duality of good and evil, the consequences of choices? Yada yada yada. Still, the tonal shift between the two storylines is jarring at times. But back to my original point: I think the Judah story is genuinely horrific. Not like jump-scare horror, but existential horror, the kind that makes you question everything. So, fellow horror hounds, am I crazy? Does anyone else see "Crimes and Misdemeanors" as a stealth horror flick, or am I just reaching? I'd love to hear your takes! P.S. Anyone know if Woody Allen actually intended it this way?! Mind blown emoji.
