"Dead Calm" Deep Dive: Was Rae Kinda... DUMB?

Okay guys, so we just finished watching "Dead Calm" and HOLY CRAP. Billy Zane is terrifyingly good, right? Like, actually gave me chills. But I have a SERIOUS question, and maybe I'm just being harsh because I was screaming at the screen the entire time, but...was Rae (Nicole Kidman) making some seriously questionable decisions? I get she's grieving and all, but letting Hughie board their boat in the first place felt like strike one. He's clearly off his rocker from the jump! And then, later on, SHE GOES BACK ONTO HIS SINKING BOAT ALONE! I mean, come ON, Rae! Was she trying to prove something to herself? Maybe overcome her fear after the trauma? It just felt so… unnecessary. Like, I understand the plot needed her to do it so she could try to fix the boat and survive, but from a character perspective, it seemed wild. My theory is that her grief was so intense that she genuinely had a death wish? Maybe not consciously, but subconsciously she was drawn to dangerous situations because she felt like she didn't deserve to be happy after losing her son. Also, side note: Sam Neill is ALWAYS good. He's just got that reliable, dad energy, even when he's being put through the wringer. I think his calm presence is part of what makes Zane's character so much more disturbing; the contrast is insane. I'm probably overthinking this whole 'Rae' thing, but I'm curious to know what you all thought! Was she intentionally reckless, or just a victim of necessity of the plot? Final thought: I think the ending was perfect. She survives, which is the best outcome, although her boat sucks. I am sure she had some serious therapy after all that, LOL! Anyway, I am here for all comments and questions.
